Introduction:

The Green Office Guide was developed to help offices personally contribute to the University of Tennessee’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2061.

It provides offices with the sustainable practices and provide support to those at the beginning of their path to sustainability.


What can we do to help you?

If at any time you have suggestions, questions or concerns related to the Green Office Guide or even sustainability practices more broadly, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can show our support in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

  • Providing financial assistance for greener electronic equipment, signage, educational materials, etc.
  • Developing a roadmap, identifying reasonable short-term and long-term goals for your particular office.

Benefits

  1. Environment:
    • Cleaner air from reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Habitat preservation from reduction of deforestation, landfill usage, and pollution.
  2. Health:
    • Lowering of respiratory issues due to cleaner air both indoors and outdoors.
    • Reduced risk of harm resulting from improper use of harsh chemicals.
  3. Economic:
    • Cycles money back into local economy by supporting local, green businesses.
    • Saves the office money by more efficiently utilizing current supplies.

Example:

If one computer is left on for a day, it results in:

  • 8 kWh which requires 2.2 lbs of coal of to be consumed which would then result in 6.292 lbs of CO2 to be released into the atmosphere…

That means that after a year that computer would have:

  • Consumed 1,051 kWh of electricity which translates to 803 lbs of coal that’s emitting 2,296.6 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere…
