Check out these ways to get involved this Earth Month!

Earth MonthDating back to 1970, both Earth Month and Earth Day have become times when we focus our energies on our environment and the things that we can do to make it better. Here at UT, we take Earth Month seriously—filling the days and weeks with events, programs, and service opportunities that promote the work we do year-round to Make Orange Green.

Take a look at the events you can take part in here on campus and in the greater Knoxville community. These events are run through our office or in partnership with one of our many on-campus partners.

Quick Facts

  • When: Friday, April 2nd
  • Where: Social Media Campaign

Wear green on Big Green Friday to help us kick off Earth Month and support the university’s efforts to Make Orange Green. Repost our Big Green Friday challenge on social media and tag us @sustainableut to be entered to win a sustainability swag bag!

Environmental Leadership AwardsQuick Facts

  • When: April 20th at 7pm
  • Where: Zoom

Join the CCE and Office of Sustainability for our annual Environmental Leadership Award ceremony. Awards in 7 different categories will be given to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Submit your nominations until April 6th here! Award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 20th at 7pm.

Quick Facts

  • When: Monday, April 19th to Friday, April 30th
  • Where: Online Symposium platform, ForagerOne

The Sustainability Symposium is an opportunity for students to present sustainability related research, projects, and art pieces. Any student may participate in this event by submitting their project or piece and how it relates to sustainability by April 15th. Learn more about the Sustainability Symposium here!

Join us for our Earth Month Free Store Pop-Up! The Free Store is a community-based resource meant to help UT students reduce their environmental impact and save money. All students are welcome to come to this event and take what they need.

 

Service Opportunities

Get outside and get involved in your local community during the month of April! Service is such an important part of our efforts to Make Orange Green. Check out our regular service opportunities on the Volunteer With Us page. Below is a list of the unique service opportunities during Earth Month.

Quick Facts

  • When: Saturday, March 27th, 10am–1pm
  • Where: Fourth Creek

In partnership with Ijams River Rescue, we will be working at 4th Creek along Papermill Bluff Greenway for the annual River Rescue Clean Up. This is part of a big service day, where all over East Tennessee individuals will be cleaning up our rivers and streams. Sign up to volunteer at our site here!

  • Where: Various Service Site in Knoxville

The Jones Center for Leadership and Service partners with us for the the annual Sustainability Day of Service. Service sites will include the Grow Lab, UT Compost Facility, and more! Sign up for April’s VOLServe event here!

  • Where: On campus or in your community

Sign up with the Office of Sustainability for a self-guided litter cleanup in your community or on campus the weekend of April 9-11th. Organize yourself or a small group to get outside and pick up litter to make the environment a cleaner place! We will provide your group with trash bags and gloves in a reusable Make Orange Green Bag. Sign up your group for the Earth Month Litter Cleanup here!
