Celebrate the Week Without Driving all month long with the Office of Sustainability

The Week Without Driving is a national movement started by nondrivers to highlight barriers to transportation access for the one third of Americans who do not drive. They ask those in positions of power to participate so they can get first hand experience and work to make transportation more accessible for everybody. UT students are the future leaders of our community, so we are asking YOU to participate in this year’s Week Without Driving! You can celebrate by 1) not driving, 2) taking the UT Week Without Driving Course, and 3) joining us at the UT Bike Fair.

The Office of Sustainability has created a course designed for busy students to be able to complete in a week, but it will be open until November 1st. It includes topics such as the history of the movement, active transportation, public transit, the impacts of car-dependency, the ways transportation and sustainability intersect, and ways to apply what you have learned. Students who complete the course will be eligible to win UT merch from Parking and Transportation, a voucher for the UT Creamery, and a certificate of completion. You will also have an opportunity to compete in the Transit Miles Competition. The top three students that travel the most miles using public or active transportation will be eligible to win additional prizes and have the opportunity to be featured on the UTK Office of Sustainability’s social media pages and LinkedIn (a great look for future jobs or for your UTK participation if you are staff). Sign up for the Week Without Driving Course today!

Join us at the Bike Fair! The fair will be by the Student Union in 21st Mortgage Plaza on October 7th from 12pm to 3pm. There, you can make yourself a bike powered smoothie, create a pipe cleaner bicycle, roll around the plaza, and learn information from organizations like Bike Walk Knoxville, Kickstand, Two Bikes, What’s Next Knoxville, and many more. Bring your bike to the fair and get a free tune-up and t-shirt. Don’t have one? Borrow one at the bike fair so you can join in on the group bike ride at 3:30pm after the fair.

We hope you’ll use this opportunity to examine how different transportation methods impact our planet, our community, and ourselves. By being mindful about the way we travel, we can make our everyday lives more sustainable.
