Campus Race to Zero Waste

Campus Race to Zero Waste (formerly RecycleMania) is a yearly intercollegiate recycling competition held between nearly 200 colleges and universities during February and March each year.

We work to encourage waste reduction and recycling efforts on campus through education, outreach, and in-person events. Each week we will host “themed” in-person campus events as well as engage in sustainability-minded online education.

Fall of 2023: Gameday Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge

On November 18th, 2023, the Vols will take on the Georgia Bulldogs! On that Saturday, the University of Tennessee is taking part in Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge and we want you to be involved! This competition is focused around diverting waste away from the landfill through recycling and composting, and Vols’ fans have the opportunity to make real change while enjoying the game! This exciting journey is a collective effort where every member of our university family, from fans, to students and staff, and to faculty and administrators, play a crucial role in building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious campus.

Our goal is simple yet powerful: to reduce waste and minimize our environmental impact, ultimately striving for a “Zero-Waste” campus (diversion rate of 90% or better). We believe that by coming together and embracing sustainable practices, we can create a positive ripple effect, not only within our University but also in the broader community and beyond.

As the Vols take on Georgia (Nov. 18th), we want to encourage our fans and university family to be mindful of where waste is disposed of. The Volunteer family is host to some of the nation’s best sports fans, and we believe that this campus has the ability to inspire real change by empowering the community.

Together, we’re making strides toward a cleaner, greener future. Join us in the Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge and be a part of this transformative movement. It’s a chance to not only contribute to a more sustainable campus but also to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
